Received his MD degree in 1980. He worked in Glasgow and Cambridge, UK in 1984-1985. He became an Associate Professor in 1988 and moved to Dokuz Eylul University, Izmir Turkey in 1989. He became a full Professor and Chairman, Department of Urology in 1994. He served as the Vice Dean, and on the Executive Committee of the Medical School.
Dr. Kirkali`s major focus was on basic, translational and clinical research in oncological urology. He participated in the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Genitourinary Group clinical trials and served in different EORTC committees for 20 years. He was elected as Secretary for 3 years and served as EORTC GU Chairman for 3 years. He was the President of the Urologic Research Society and the GU Global Group. Dr. Kirkali was the founder and Executive Committee Member of the World Urological Oncology Federation. He served on the Board of European School of Urology (ESU) and on the Faculty of ESU, European School of Oncology, Balkan School of Oncology and UICC TNM Expert Panel. Dr. Kirkali was the Chairman of the AUA International Member Committee in 2008-2010, and was a member of the Section Secretaries/Membership Council of AUA. In 2009 he was elected as Congress Organizing Chair to the Board of Chairmen of SIU. He is on the Cancer Working Group of Turkish Academy of Sciences. He was the Tract Member and Chair at ECCO-ESMO Meetings. He took active roles in ICUD as Committee Chair and was the Chairman of EAU/ICUD 2010 Renal Cancer Consensus Meeting. He was elected for the first EAU/AUA International Academic Exchange Program in 1993. He received numerous awards and is Honorary Member of the EAU, EORTC and Georgian Association of Urology. In 2007 he was appointed by the President of the Republic of Turkey to represent Izmir’s bid for EXPO 2015 in Bureau International des Expositions.
In October 2010 Dr. Kirkali moved to USA and currently working as a Senior Scientific Advisor at the National Institutes of Health. He manages and conducts clinical trials and clinical research on BPH, LUTS and urinary stones among other urologic conditions. He is a member of the American Association of GenitoUrinary Surgeons.
He served on 47 Editorial Boards, founder of 10 scientific organizations, mentor for many students and scientists. He organized 100 meetings, gave numerous invited lectures around the world and was a Visiting Professor in over 40 countries. Dr. Kirkali is Editor of one book, author of 35 book chapters and published 245 peer-reviewed papers in PubMed. His work in SCI (373) has received over 6625 citations (h index: 37).
